iOS4 on iPhone 3G (without S)

by scholly on June 17, 2010

Thanks to a colleague who is developing iPhone applications I was able to test the upcoming release of the new iPhone OS – now called iOS version 4 (iOS4). Unfortunately I do not have an iPhone 3GS or even iPhone 4, so I was only able to test the new OS for iPhone 3G.

So what do I get?

  • Folders: with a simple drag and hold one icon over the other iOS automatically suggests to create a folder based on the two applications (e.g. if the 2 apps are games you get “Games” as suggested folder name). Easily you can group apps and the time of looking for apps on screen 5-10 is obsolet – what a relief! 12 apps is the max number per folder.
  • All Inboxes: Finally there is no need to switch email accounts anymore. The combined Inbox for all accounts is a big step.
  • Location notification: If there is an app using your location there is a little sign in the task bar indicating that.
  • 5x digital zoom: even the 3G gets that – some zoom for the cam

What I am missing?

  • Multitasking – but that is exclusive for 3GS and iPhone 4 due to CPU power
  • iBook – no idea why this is still missing in that version

Summary
Common Inbox and Folders make life easier for all iPhone users :-)

I wish I’d been aware of the issue a few weeks ago – I wouldn’t have bought Thesis.
